How to make your resume stand out

Working in sports is a very competitive industry. In all aspects including marketing, pr, and operations, it can be hard to stand out among other candidates when applying for jobs. To make your resume writing experience a little easier, here are a few tips I have learned along the way.

List your most important skills: When receiving such a high volume of applicants, most sports companies will not take the time to look over every application. Instead they use software technology to look through the applications in search of specific skills and keywords that fit their job description. Before you submit your resume, look through the description of the job you are applying for and see how you can connect your own skills to the ones the company is looking for.

Use Action Verbs: Action verbs help create an emphasis on the about a task or event you have completed. Using action verbs can help you stand out compared to other applicants who stick to generic verbs. Here's a list of actions verbs to use in your resume.

Detail your work experience: When the hiring committee looks over your accomplish, they want to see what you accomplished and how it made an impact in your areas of work. Show what you've done with examples.

Use a simple format and standard font: After you have written your resume, read through, a lot. You might even want to ask another business professional to look over your resume for you. Make sure your resume flows and easy to read through. Pick a common font and only use bold for work titles.

My best advice I can give is to ask for help. I know that my resume would not be strong without the perspective of someone else. Resume writing can take days, even. months, so don't get discouraged if it takes longer than expected. After you've finished writing, ask your self, would this job hire me based off of this one page about me? If not, make changes!
