How to set yourself a part in college (for sports pr)
Starting off early is always the best idea in any competitive industry. Partially in sports, getting a job once you have graduated will become very difficult if you don't have any previous experience. To make your life easier once you have graduated, I recommend getting involved in the industry early on. Here are a few tips I have to start setting yourself a part.
Join Clubs: Showing that you are involved on campus can be a great addition on your resume. Clubs can you help you make meaningful connections as well as build your skills. Most schools
have PR, Sports, or business driven clubs. Do your research, and find which clubs fit best for you.
Work for your school athletic department: A great way to get involved in sports is working for your schools sports teams. Most Universities offer various jobs and internships within their Athletic Department. Some of the common ones can are team manager, equipment manager, marketing intern, ticketing intern, sponsorships, and more depending on your school.
Get an Internship: Most professional sports teams offer summer internships open to college students. Even minor league and local teams will look for students to help out in exchange for
experience. While some internships may be competitive, do your research and find ones that fit with your previous experience.
Gain Work Experience: If you can't find a job on sports, there is no harm in gaining additional work experience in other fields. Oftentimes other jobs will allow you to gain skills that you use in the future. It is always good to have a back up.
Reach out to people already in the industry: Most people already working in sports are always willing to give advice to those starting out. Connecting on LinkedIn and sending a message can give the chance to talk to someone working in sports.
Getting ahead can never hurt, especially since sports is a very competitive industry. If none of the tips above work for you, reach out to your college career center for advice.
